Colchester Zoo - Colchester, Essex

Colchester Zoo is home to over 260 species and set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes. They’re listed as the 11th best Zoo around the world, and in the top 2 Zoos in the UK! Now that’s impressive and means Colchester Zoo is a family attraction not to be missed.

During a day out at Colchester Zoo you will see a huge variety of animals and learn an awful lot about them.  The list of animals here is as impressive as it is diverse; Red Pandas, Cheetahs, Penguins, Lions, Wolves, Giraffes, Orangutans, Elephants, Komodo Dragons, Meerkats and much more. With the opportunity to join in at feeding time and visit the discovery centre, you’ll never be stuck for things to do. There’s also an array of Zoo themed restaurants within the park, perfect for when the kids need to refuel.

Promenade Park – Maldon, Essex

Located on the sloping bank of the river Blackwater, Promenade Park in Maldon has been a popular recreational spot for many years.

'Maldon Splash Park', the 'Valley Adventure Play Area' and 'Pirates Bay Adventure Golf' are just a few of the fun attractions available at Promenade Park. Fancy a drink? There is a selection of kiosks at the park, or if you wish to go further afield the high street is close by, along with Hythe Quay, (famously) home of the sailing barge.

The 18-hole 'Pirates Bay Adventure Golf' is new and is known for talking pirates, canons, water explosions, waterfalls and a huge pirate ship! Are you going to be able to remain focused on securing your golfing victory?

Adventure Island – Southend-on-Sea, Essex

Adventure Island is known as the number 1 free admission fun park in Essex! The fun park runs on a wristband policy, the colour band represents the access to certain rides depending on the individual’s height and thrill level. These coveted wristbands allow play all day!

Adventure Island has lots to offer the whole family. Choose from a thrilling selection of rides from 'Rollercoaster Rage' to slightly tamer (but still fun) rides such as the traditional 'Big Wheel'. We’re convinced there’s a ride that every member of the family will love, and want to go on over and over again.

Great Notley Country Park – Braintree, Essex

Great Notley Country Park, Braintree covers 100 acres of open space. The country park is home to 'Sky Ropes' and Essex’s longest play trail – 1.2km. Not forgetting a giant see-saw, climbing forest, tyre swings, sand pits, rope climbers, forts and a water play area! Making it a fantastic park for all ages to discover and explore.

The country park is also popular for activities such as: birdwatching, walking, fishing, cycling, kite-flying, horse riding, picnics and football. The perfect outing then, for a sunny day in Essex.

Hedingham Castle – Halstead, Essex

Hedingham Castle was built c.1130. There are 4 magnificent floors to explore; one of the four is the traditional Banqueting Hall, where you’ll discover the remarkable 28-foot arch. This is one of the largest Norman arches in England.

Throughout the summer there are a variety of special events; car days, bank holidays and jousting to name a few. A visit to the castle and the beautiful grounds is ideal for a family get together, don’t forget your picnic!

East Anglian Railway Museum – Colchester, Essex

East Anglian Railway Museum is family friendly, giving everyone the opportunity to get up close to a wide collection of steam trains and full restored buildings dating back to Victorian times. The 'Goods Shed' is one of them, packed with genuine and original railway memorabilia.

Another fantastic attraction at the Railway Museum is the Heritage Centre, this is an indoor exhibition, which features lots of exhibits and displays of railways through time. There’s something for everyone.
